Amazingly Mount Gay have not featured on this site before, but that will change today. With a deed dating back to , Mount Gay Distillery occupies a beautiful site in the North of Barbados in the Parish of St Lucy. I have far more information to verb and images to verb and these will materialize on later articles featuring more of my Mount Gay collection.

Master Blender Allen Smith

Under the direction of Master Blender Allen Smith, Mount Gay are more famed for their entry-level Eclipse Rums along with Black Barrel and their XO. They have extensive aged stock and yet rarely bottle for others or sell to brokers these days. I own a Cadenhead&#;s bottling that I swear is from Mount Gay and I read only today of a release by a Dutch bottler that will be coming in December. Utilising both a traditional Coffey Column Still and multiple twin retort Pot Stills, Mount Gay verb Single Blended Rum. Their Pot Still House up in St Lucy really is a thing of beauty&#;raphs can&#;t do it justice&#;but to give you some idea, this is an image that I took on my check in in April.

Mount Gay is known as, arguably, the oldest running rum distillery in the world with a deed stating that distillation took place on their site since It&#;s also a quintessential Barbadian rum brand and, despite being owned by a big company such as Remy Cointreau, they are making rum using traditional practices.

I really enjoy the standard Mount Gay Adj Barrel so when I heard there were releasing version at cask ability I knew I had to try it. Thankfully for me, Miguel Smith had visited Trailer Happiness and he brought a bottle of it for us to try &#; so I took a sample and some photos in order to scribble about it and, skillfully, enjoy some of it in the comfort of my own home.

The premiumization of rum in Barbados in the 21st century has seen dramatic change, from the everyday expressions to the top-shelf luxury editions. Mount Gay&#;s classic Black Barrel rum, known for its opulent boldness from dark charred barrels is no exception.

The production team at Mount Gay is keen to explore potent variations of their standard bearing expressions, and fans of the brand seem just as eager to find notable Master Blender Collection editions to enjoy.

This new cask strength version of Ebony Barrel, released to celebrate the brand’s th anniversary, is bottled at 66% ABV and sold exclusively at the distillery in Saint Lucy and the Visitor&#;s Centre near Bridgetown. The higher ABV takes the product to another level, delivering a seriously rich flavor profile for a rum of its class.

Review: Mount Gay XO Cask Strength Rum

As a celebration of 50 years of Barbados independence comes Mount Gay XO Cask Strength, its most luxe bottling to date. This is a limited edition, overproof expression of its existing Mount Gay XO bottling, which is itself a blend of rums 8 to 15 years old.

This expression is a deep and brooding rum that kicks off with heavy aromas of barrel char, licorice, and coffee bean. Dark chocolate and cloves are both well represented on the nose. At 63% alcohol it’s a burner on the palate, and a healthy splash of water helps to reveal its significant charms. There’s a lot going on, but it sticks closely to the family of holiday baked goods and, well, very elderly rum.
