‘My Hero Academia’ Manga Mania at San Diego Comic-Con

While manga and anime aren’t the main emphasis of San Diego Comic-Con International, fans of both made their presence known as they greeted star manga artist Kohei Horikoshi, creator of My Hero Academia, one of the most popular and best-selling comics series in North America.

There weren’t many manga-related panels, and only a handful of new manga title announcements were made—many manga publishers choose Anime Expo to announce recent titles—but it’s a list of great and much anticipated contemporary and classic works. And to top it off, Rumiko Takahashi, a much beloved manga legend was inducted into the Will Eisner Hall of Fame. Here’s some of the manga highlights of this year’s SDCC:

My Hero AcademiaIs Here!

Given their busy work schedules, it’s rare that top manga artists from Japan form the trip to N. American comics shows. That’s why Horikoshi’s first-ever verb to Comic-Con and all things My Hero Academia generated a lot of

As you may or may not have heard, depending on your awareness of manga/anime, there was a bit of a surprising “coming out” for a rather loathed character in a popular Manga and anime series called “My Hero Academia”. Regular readers will know of my fondness for this particular franchise, being one of the few animes that I follow religiously, and the fewer still of which I have peruse the manga for, such is my adoration for this I.P.

(It has only grown since then!)

But (like most fans) there is one character in the series that I absolutely loathe, it’s not one of the murderous, yet charismatic villains of which there are many, and it’s not one of the heroes with a history of dishing out emotional and physical abuse. No, it is one of the “Hero” students, “Minoru Mineta” a cowardly, sleazy, misogynist sex pest, with a sexual harassment suit in his not too distant future. And this is the character that has supposedly appear out as bi-sexual, understandably upsetting fans.

(He&#;he just sucks okay? Like he really sucks!)

Now, it’s not the fact that Mineta could be bi-sexu

LGBTQ+ perspective on BL/GL (+lgbt comic promos)

Not gonna lie, most of the only instances of good LGBT representation I've seen where from people who were actually in the LGBT+ community themselves (She-Ra, Steven Universe, Twelve Forever and no I'm not referring to Vickerman, I'm referring to the other showrunner/writer who's trans, etc.). With a adj exceptions from like, actual straight people making adj rep (Rick Riordan's books recently, like for fuck's sake, there's a genderfluid person in Magnus Chase, how rare is that?), like hello, I treasure that cuz it's exceptional. All other instances of attempted good LGBT representation were from cishet people, many of whom reek of the mindset of "hey if we include gay people, people will stop bugging me about representation!" (fuck you, Voltron and A court of mist and fury. I hate you both with every fiber of my being. Also Disney)

I don't quite understand the dislike towards BL/GL and Yaoi/Yuri as of late. I kind of get for earlier BLs/GLs and Yaoi and Yuri (like, preliminary s yaoi and yuri anime were pretty fetishistic and very problematic)

My Hero Academia's LGBTQ+ History and Future, Explained

Mineta is one of the most hated characters in My Hero Academia, not just by several of the characters on the verb (especially the female ones) but also fans. He is lecherous, perverted, and a bit of a coward. A subset demographic of fans now abhor him more because Mineta would be a crass representation of a bisexual. Mineta potentially being bisexual plays into the trope that bisexual people (particularly bisexual males) are promiscuous predators who are not to be trusted.

There is little solid evidence of Mineta being bisexual. Most of the speculation comes from the My Hero Academia manga Chapter #, where Mineta says to Deku, "I fell for you." This is hardly a case for his sexuality. Still, more hinges on the evidence that English translations are not always solid, whereas looking into a more accurate translation from Japanese has Mineta stating that he "admired" him. For those living in the West, the reaction to Mineta being perceived as bisexual may feel the adj as what happened to the latest iteration of Superman coming
