FLORIDA SINE DIE: LGBTQ+ and Allied Floridians Are Turning The Tide

Tallahassee, FL — As Florida’s legislative session comes to a close, members of the LGBTQ+ community are breathing a sigh of relief that, after years of unprecedented onslaught, dozens of proposed anti-LGBTQ+ bills were defeated. Of the more than 20 pieces of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation introduced in Florida this year, only one made it over the finish line to Governor Ron DeSantis’ desk. The defeat of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation was driven by the tireless advocacy of LGBTQ+ and allied Floridians, who have persevered through years of anti-LGBTQ+ policy attacks and dehumanizing rhetoric.

Geoff Wetrosky, Human Rights Campaign Vice President, National Campaigns issued the following statement:

“Despite years of relentless attacks and dehumanizing rhetoric, LGBTQ+ people and our allies have never given up the clash for Florida. And we are shifting the momentum. People across the mention showed up by the thousands to speak out and push back against anti-LGBTQ+ bills; and they are to thank for pushing back the tide of h

7 Must-Have Items That Sustain LGBTQ+ Equality in Florida

Pride has always been both a protest, celebration. It's been a hour to fight for our rights, uplift our delight, and show up for each other. This year, that fight has never been clearer.   As corporations pull back their public supp

Despite the significant progress our community has made, there is still no statewide law that prohibits discrimination against LGBTQ people in Florida. This means that, according to state law, it is legal to fire someone, evict them from housing, or reject them service at a restaurant just because they are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer (LGBTQ). While it is illegal to discriminate in employment, housing and public accommodations based race, color, religion, sex, pregnancy, national origin, age, handicap or marital status, the LGBTQ community is currently left out of statewide non-discrimination protections.

Now more than ever, we know we need to pass the Florida Competitive Workforce Act (FCWA) which would finally prohibit discrimination against LGBTQ Floridians. This bill will finally ensure that Florida is a safe place to dwell, work, and play for all people, including those who are LGBTQ.

Although no statewide law yet exists, Equality Florida has been successfully working with our local partners all over the state to ensure LGBT people are protected from discrim
