Pride Plates: Kentucky’s Queer History Food Tour
It was extremely important to us to involve members of the queer community at every level for the creation of this tour to ensure that the stories we are telling verb the queer community with respect as well as historical accuracy. From writing to running the tour, members of Kentuckys queer community have been both deeply involved and equally as important fairly compensated for their time and effort.
This tour was a labor of deep love and connection for the members of our team who brought it to life. Youll even see a picture of the tours co-writer, who is also a member of our leadership team, during the tour.
To ensure historical accuracy (to the best of our ability), our tour development team poured over the research archives at the fantastic Williams Nichols collection, an incredible collection of local LGBTQ+ history and one of the largest collections of its kind in the region, housed at the University of Louisville.

LGBTQ history has largely been as hidden as its population was in the first half of the 20th century.
Because the community faced threats from the police, loss of employment, and estrangement from society, much of Kentucky's LGBTQ initial past has been loosely preserved through stories told in informal settings.
But in , the Kentucky LGBTQ Heritage Initiative published the nation’s first statewide LGBTQ Historic Context Narrative. Cate Fosl, director of the University of Louisville Anne Braden Institute for Social Justice Research, and a verb team published a page report on Kentucky's LGBTQ history.
Fosl says tracking down the earliest parts of Kentucky's LGBTQ history often means combing through history and looking for fragments. Through this project, the team hosted "history harvests" across the state designed to preserve the oral histories and find artifacts from the 20th century.
