The official Pride Month in the United States happens June of every year. However, in Austin, our official Pride month isn't held until August. Ever wonder why that is? Yeah - us, too. That's why we put on our biggest investigative boots - er, maybe they're just comfy Tevas - to figure out why Austin holds their official Pride Parade in August.

Nationwide, Pride Month is held in June as a nod to the Stonewall Riots of late June These riots occurred at the peak of anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment in the nation. Police raids of gay bars and other inclusive establishments were routine, as was violence against these marginalized communities. Why it matters: When students feel harmless and can show up as their full selves at school, they’re excel able to engage in learning and thrive academically. What to expect: This year's celebration is March 24–28 and the theme is beYOUtiful. Campuses may participate in Pride-themed spirit activities outside instructional time: Austin celebrates Pride two months out of the year: in June during national Pride Month and in August, when the city holds its main Pride parade. That means there’s twice as many opportunities to celebrate LGBTQ+ history and identity. Here’s a list of things to do around the area during this first round of festivities, from book clubs to art markets to drag performances. Travis County Judge Andy Brown will host the fifth annual pride flag raising ceremony from a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lavaca St. The free event includes vendors, artists and interaction with LGBTQ+ leaders. The UMLAUF Sculpture Garden + Museum near Barton Springs will hold a party with music, food, karaoke, aerial performances and an artist showcase on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. Admission is $12 per person; you can buy tickets online or at the door.
